Truckee cross-country | Girls sweep top three in Sparks

The Truckee girls cross-country team continued its run of dominance at the Sparks Invitational at Rancho San Rafael Park last Friday with an unprecedented 1-2-3 finish in a field of 92 racers.

The clean sweep of the top three spots easily lifted the Truckee girls to victory with 38 points, with second-place Galena finishing with 54 points.

Not only did Skyler Flora extend her undefeated streak to four this season, she also won the 5K meet for the third time, in 19:05.

Steadily working to close the time gap was teammate Gabrielle Rinne, who finished second in 19:41, her closest finish to Flora since their days at Alder Creek Middle School.

Freshman Carrie Bradley also continued to improve, registering a new personal record with a third-place finish in 20:45. Rounding out the point scorers for Truckee were Amanda Rae in 13th place (22:14) and Olivia Yale in 19th place (23:00).

A rather astounding statistic is that seven out of the top 11 female finishers in Friday’s race were Truckee residents, representing three different schools.

In addition to the THS athletes already mentioned, Bishop Manogue’s Stephanie DeWald finished fourth (20:51) and Eliza McCullough finished 11th (22:06), while Sugar Bowl Academy’s Danielle Nivinski finished eighth (21:29) and Hannah Halvorsen finished 10th (21:59).

The Truckee boys finished sixth in a field of 14 teams with 142 points. Galena took top honors with a score of 80. Truckee’s perennial front-runner, Noah Oberriter, placed fifth (17:54).

Simeon Murphy and Ian Wilson battled it out for 17th and 18th place, finishing within two seconds of each other in 18:47 and 18:49, respectively. Wilson’s time was a new 5K personal record. Also scoring points for Truckee were Jared Murphy in 51st (20:06) and Hudson Verbeck in 56th (20:14).
