Truckee Pop Warner | Players, cheerleaders honored for academics

The Truckee Youth Football and Cheer organization made the transition back to the Sagebrush Empire Pop Warner league from the Sierra Youth Football League this fall. Part of the benefit of being part of the Pop Warner Little Scholars organization is that they truly look at their participants as student-athletes rather than just students playing football or cheerleading.

The boys and girls in Pop Warner are required to maintain a 2.0 grade point average or the equivalent in their school district on the report card to participate.

A quote from the Pop Warner Little Scholars website states: “We believe that the standards we have set give these children a sense of responsibility and an appreciation for academics and athletics that will help them develop later on in life.”

Participants in Pop Warner Little Scholars are required to submit their report card from the prior school year and then are converted to a national standardized 100-point grade point average. Each athlete must maintain a 70-point grade point average to be a student athlete in good standards.

Each year, the most academically accomplished Pop Warner kids compete for Academic All-American status. This process begins at the association level and up through each of the eight Pop Warner regions to the national level. The athletes must also have completed fifth grade through eighth grade to quality.

Truckee Youth Football and Cheer is proud to announce that many of their student athletes have achieved the opportunity to apply for All-American status.

National first team All-Americans are determined by a final score that is calculated for each student. That score consists of up to 100 points (85 percent) for the students’ grades for the prior school year, along with up to 18 points (15 percent) awarded for the attached Addendum sheet of activities and achievements.

Only 35 football and 35 cheer first team All-Americans are awarded. Second team All-Americans are then determined by Pop Warner based on the number of applications that were submitted for that year. Last year’s total was approximately 6,000 second team All-Americans. The Pop Warner Scholar All-Americans will be announced by April 1 via the Pop Warner website, Facebook and Twitter.
