Truckee basketball | Girls march past Sparks; boys fall in fourth quarter

The Truckee girls basketball team dominated its Division I-A contest at Sparks on Thursday, running away with a 65-24 win.

The Wolverines jumped out to a 12-5 lead after one quarter and led 28-10 at the half. They proceeded to outscore the hosts 18-5 in the third quarter and 19-9 in the fourth.

Truckee senior Kaylee Neill led the Wolverines with 15 points. Sophomore Sydney Mock scored 14 points, while Lauren Peak had eight, Diana Rosas and Emily Houghton each had six, and Cassandra Sawyer and Anais Fay had five points apiece.

The Truckee girls are now 2-1 overall and 2-0 in league play. Sparks is 1-6 overall and 1-1 in league.

Truckee’s boys, meanwhile, led for a good portion of their game against the Railroaders before letting it slip away in the fourth quarter in a 52-49 loss.

“We played well for three quarters,” said Truckee coach Sky Nelson, whose Wolverines led 34-23 at the end of the third quarter. “Sparks has some shooters, and they went off in the fourth quarter. And we didn’t handle their pressure very well.”

Louden Smith and Nick Oberriter scored 15 points apiece to lead the Wolverines, while Ian pulled down 10 rebounds. Isaiah Campbell led the Railroaders with 25 points. He made five 3-pointers in 12 attempts.

Truckee hosted a nonleague game against Division I McQueen on Saturday. The result was not available.
