A total of 166 Far West skiers ages 12 and 13 showed up for the season-opening U14 slalom race on rock-hard snow at Sugar Bowl this past Saturday.
First after the opening run, Payton Norton of Diamond Peak powered through the gates to win the race by 2.51 seconds combined time. Cameron Smith from Squaw Valley finished second and Charlie Regelbrugge from Mammoth finished third.
Brent Wolf and Marek Hlubucek, also from Diamond Peak, had solid performances, earning 18th and 20th place, respectively.
On the girls’ side, Belle Johnson of Diamond Peak, who was first after the opening run, stormed in to win the race by 5.42 seconds combined time. Mack Carkeet from Mammoth was second and Sengen Meyer from Squaw Valley third.
Emily White from Diamond Peak had a strong performance in 18th place. Teammate Katie Fischer finished 38th, and Jennifer Thompson and Julia Calpadi finished 54th and 61st, respectively, out of 85 competitors.
Sunday brought more of the same firm conditions. For the boys, Diamond Peak’s Nick Fischer and Noah Cleary had stellar performances with Fischer finishing seventh and Cleary finishing eighth. Hlubucek finished 25th and Wolf was 26th out of 81 competitors.
Belle Johnson podiumed again, this time with a silver. AJ Hurt from Squaw Valley finished first, and Sengen Meyer from Squaw Valley finished third. Katie Fischer finished 41st and Thompson 60th out of 86 competitors that day.
