Letter to the Editor: Speak up about the Meyers Area Plan

A quote used by the Meyers Community Project development and Implementation Plan, Task 1,2,3: “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.” — Margaret Mead

I picked up the Meyers Area Plan and the Meyers Community Project Development and Implementation Plan Task 1,2,3 and there is so much going on in these two plans.

Being a 43-year resident; 20 on South Shore and 23 in Meyers, I encourage everyone to come to the meeting to be held Wednesday in the CCC building behind Lira’s Market at 6 p.m. in the dining hall.

This is close to one of your last chances to express what you would like to see developed in the Meyers community.

It has been stated that the Meyers Catalyst/Incentive project is not being pursued now, but will probably be reinvented with a different name down the road, so don’t be fooled; it will rear its ugly head again. Stated by One Globe in the MCPDIP, page 66, “We are not planning to plan, we are planning to implement. We have already begun the pre-development process.”

One area of concern still is that incentives could be used to revise various zoning areas, increase height and density along with Commercial Floor Area while also re-designating land use. As stated in the MAP pages 2-16, “Projects are eligible for increased maximum height and development density as shown in table 2-2, if Planning Commission makes written findings certifying that the project meets all requirements of Sec 90A and one other.” This leaves the back door open for One Globe to come back in and do basically what they proposed in the first place.

Will Meyers eventually become a monopolized community by a corporation or maintain the small individual businesses that keep our community diversified?

Stand up, Meyers, let your voices be heard!
