Kingsbury Grade to close early Thursday morning

Kingsbury Grade (State Route 207) will close early Thursday morning for the next phase of construction.

The Nevada Department of Transportation says the road will close to through traffic near the summit, just east of Tramway Drive. This through traffic closure will reopen on Friday, May 23, in time for Memorial Day weekend. During this time, traffic traveling from the Carson Valley to Lake Tahoe and Lake Tahoe to Carson Valley that would normally use Kingsbury Grade will need to use the detour of U.S. 50 (Spooner Summitt). Residents and businesses will be able to access their homes and places of business by detouring via U.S. 50. Both emergency and public transportation vehicles, including hotel (both valley and lake side) shuttles, will always have access and will not be required to use a detour.

“By closing Kingsbury Grade to through traffic during this short three-week period, our crews will be able to follow the aggressive schedule we have developed and complete the project in an accelerated 12 to 18 months,” Pedro Rodriguez, NDOT project manager, said.

Construction will also continue during the summer months starting on Tuesday, May 27 through Friday, Aug. 29, with Kingsbury Grade open to through traffic, but nighttime construction-related lane closures and delays to be expected. The road will be open with one lane in each direction during daytime hours, weekends and all holidays through these summer months.

The approximately $15 million project will reconstruct pavement and make drainage, safety, curb and gutter, sidewalk, lighting and other improvements on areas of Kingsbury Grade from just east of Daggett Summit (Tramway Drive) to the intersection of U.S. 50 at Stateline.

The public can sign up for construction alerts and see additional project information at kingsburyproject.com. A hotline for the Kingsbury Grade Pavement Reconstruction Project has been set up at 1-844-888-ROAD and messages will be returned within 24 hours.
