El Dorado run raises more than $20,000 to help cure Type 1 diabetes

More than 200 runners traversed the El Dorado County foothills during the third annual Coloma River Run benefitting the Northern California Inland Chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, a global organization that networks volunteers and staff to generate more than $1.7 billion for Type 1 diabetes research.

Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease in which a person’s pancreas stops producing insulin, a hormone that enables the absorption of energy from food. The disease affects approximately three million Americans and is diagnosed to almost 80 Americans per day.

Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Norcal board member Roger Leasure developed the 5k, 10k and 10-mile trail race event as an innovative way to ensure income during the recession. This year, a combination of entry fees, event sponsors and supporters produced more than $20,000.

“The advancements in research are accelerating faster than our funding, so we need to think outside of the box, while raising funds and awareness,” Leasure said. “This 24/7 disease never takes a break, and neither can we.”

Along with event sponsors, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation partners with community organizations and leaders, like the American River Conservancy and the El Dorado County Office of Education, to make events like this successful.

“Many of our students and their families are impacted by this inescapable disease,” said El Dorado County Office of Education Superintendent of Schools Jeremy M. Meyers. “I am grateful for the services and resources made available to our community through Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, and we will continue to support them every step of the way to a cure.”
