LTUSD appoints new principal

The Lake Tahoe Unified School District Board of Education hired a new South Tahoe High School principal this week.

Thomas “Chad” Houck replaces Ivone Larson, who was named the assistant superintendent for secondary education, career technical education and AVID for LTUSD.

“My family and I are extremely excited to join the LTUSD family and I hope to be a Viking for a long time to come,” Houck said in statement.

Houck was most recently employed by Sierra Sands Unified School District in Ridgecrest, Calif., where he served as principal of alternative education at Mesquite High School for one year and assistant principal for curriculum and instruction and attendance at Burroughs High School for eight years, according to press release.

Before that, Houck taught physics, integrated science and aquatics as the aquatics director and teacher at Yosemite Union High School District. He also spent five years teaching physics and aquatics at San Marino Unified School District.

Dave Otash, principal of Burroughs High School, praised Houck as a capable leader.

“To be a highly effective high school principal, it takes a well-rounded leader who can inspire synergy among teacher, student and parent groups,” Otash stated. “Chad has demonstrated a talent for listening as well as leading. He is methodical and confident as a leader, as well as reflective and sensitive to stakeholders on campus and in the community.”

Houck received a master’s of science degree in Postsecondary Administration of Student Affairs from the University of California, along with B.A. and B.S. degrees from Vanderbilt University, where he studied mechanical engineering.

He is up to date on “educational issues” and “trends,” according to Shirley Kennedy, assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction at SSUSD.

He is also currently a Doctor of Philosophy candidate with Capella University.

Dr. James Tarwater, superintendent of LTUSD, expressed his excitement to have Houck in his district.

“Never in my career have I had such a distinguished candidate,” Tarwater said in statement. “He’s one in a million and we are really pleased that he and his family will soon be joining us.”

Houck’s contract begins Aug. 1.
