Vandal cuts down power pole north of Tahoe

An “extreme act of vandalism” last week on a 25kV power line north of Lake Tahoe has led Liberty Utilities to once again ask for the public’s help, according to the utility company.

The vandalized power line runs along the western slope of I-80 west and provides power to the Floriston and Farad areas. It was affected on July 10 in the afternoon, when a vandal used a chain saw to cut down a power pole, the utility company reported.

About 70 customers were without power for nearly eight hours.

“We’ve experienced vandalism in that area in the past, but nothing as brazen as someone cutting down a power pole,” said Sam Rohn, environmental, health, safety and security manager. “Vandals are attempting to steal copper wiring, but in the process are putting themselves and the community in danger by coming in contact with live electrical wires.”

Rohn added that Liberty Utilities has increased its security measures at undisclosed locations.

The public is asked to call local law enforcement or Liberty Utilities at 1-800-782-2506 to report suspicious activity around any electrical facilities and structures.
