Student becomes first from South Lake to complete ARC

This summer, a South Tahoe High School student became the first person from South Lake Tahoe to complete the Truckee-based Adventure Risk Challenge — a 23-day program combining rigorous academic instruction and outdoor education.

Tristan Deatherage, 15, was the youngest participant during this summer’s course and the only South Lake Tahoe student to complete the program in ARC’s 11-year history, Program Coordinator Sean McAlindin said.

“He was one of the youngest members of the group,” he said, “but at the same time, one of the most self-reliant and responsible.”

During the leadership and literacy program, participants go backpacking, rock climbing, whitewater rafting and more, as well as produce a variety of writing assignments.

McAlindin said he’d like to see more youth from South Lake Tahoe involved in ARC, and he hopes Tristan can help make that happen in the future.
