Tahoe City man, 21, suspected of DUI in major-injury crash

TAHOE CITY, Calif. — A local man was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving for his alleged role in a major-injury single-vehicle crash Monday evening.

Emergency crews responded at about 10:40 p.m. to Fairway Drive in Tahoe City. According to the California Highway Patrol, two passengers who were riding inside a 1972 Jeep CJ5 were already being transported via CareFlight helicopter to Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno with major injuries.

The driver, Robert Munro, 21, of Tahoe City, and another passenger, Collin Esacoss, 22, also of Tahoe City, were not injured.

According to CHP, the crash occurred on US Forest Service Road 71, north of Bunker Drive, near Fairway.

Munro told authorities he and three friends were traveling at about 15 mph on the dirt road when he failed to make a left-hand turn. The Jeep overturned and fell down an embankment, coming to rest roughly 30 feet off the road.

The two passengers — a male and female whose names and ages weren’t immediately known — were ejected from the Jeep, according to CHP. As of Tuesday morning, they were reported to be in ICU at Renown.

Munro was arrested on suspicion of DUI alcohol and causing a collision with injuries, according to CHP.
