The annual Tahoe Art League Artist Studio Tour will continue in the South Shore today, allowing the public to once again participate in a self-guided tour of art galleries in the area.
This year’s tour features 50 artists — the most in event history and a significant increase from the 23 artists who signed up last year. This year also happens to be the Tahoe Art League’s 50th Anniversary.
On the free tour, participants use maps of the South Shore to visit up to 18 studios in the area. Most studios are at the artists’ homes where the public can see paintings, sculptures and other works created live.
“When people get involved personally with the work and see it being made, they become more connected with the art community,” said Kelly Smith Cassidy, vice president of the Tahoe Art League.
Mosaic artist Ken Patterson and bronze artist Lee Polluck will accompany Cassidy, an artistic welder, at her home studio during the tour.
Other artists include painter Dave Russo, painter and photographer Pam Brekas, stone sculptor David Foster, painter Carroll Jones, jewelry designer Crista Dixon, painter Cheryl Lawson and dozens more.
“One of the coolest things about the Studio Tour is that it is really different that the art shows,” Cassidy said in an email. “It is an event where you can see the artists ‘in their element.’”
There is also a promotion going on at the event that involves getting a card, or “passport,” stamped at each studio visited. If participants visit 10 or more studios they get their name added into a drawing to win artwork and prizes.
Cassidy said one of the pieces she’s offering in the raffle would otherwise carry a $450 price tag.
The tour, which was also held last weekend, will wrap up Sunday. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 1 through Aug. 3.
Maps showing the location of all 18 participating studios can be found at various businesses around town, the studios themselves, www.talart.org or the Tahoe Art League art center.
