Volunteers needed for pollution prevention

The League to Save Lake Tahoe is seeking volunteers to help place “Keep Tahoe Blue — No Dumping” markers on storm drains in the South Shore.

The organization, in partnership with the City of South Lake Tahoe and the Tahoe Keys Property Owners Association, is hosting two Stewards of Stormwater events this month at the Tahoe Keys.

The first is on Aug. 18 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., and the second is on Aug. 27 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

According to the League, communities around the lake have outdated storm drain systems that, in some cases, drain directly into Lake Tahoe or its tributaries. The markers are used to help educate the public about protecting the water from illegal dumping.

Volunteers and team leaders help with installing storm drain markers, sweeping debris from storm drains, picking up trash, and writing “SOS” and “no dumping” around the drains in chalk.

“Well over 50 pipes drain directly in Lake Tahoe’s waters, carrying sediment and other pollutants,” said Marilee Movius, community engagement manager at the League. “The Stewards of Stormwater program is a great way to mobilize locals and we are grateful for our collaboration with these South Lake Tahoe organizations to help do this important work for the lake.”

A Stewards of Stormwater event on Aug. 9 saw more than 50 children and many other volunteers place 41 markers on storm drains in Incline Village. They also picked up 40 pounds of litter.

Anyone wishing to participate should bring a reusable water bottle and wear comfortable walking shoes, casual clothes and sunscreen, according to the League. Refreshments will be provided.

For more information or to volunteer, Movius can be contacted at or (53) 541-5388.
