On July 1, registration began for Lake Tahoe Community College’s new bachelor’s degree program. The community college will now offer a degree in Global Business Management, which already exists at Sierra Nevada College, a private school on the North Shore. Beginning this fall, students enrolled at LTCC can earn a degree from the four-year college.

LTCC will offer two to three degree-focused classes at a time that will rotate each semester. This will allow students to progress through the program on a directed path, according to program organizers.

“It’s essentially a pipeline of classes,” SNC Tahoe business department chair Kendra Wong said.

This fall, LTCC offers two classes taught by adjunct staff from Sierra Nevada College — Cross Cultural Management and Forces Driving Globalization — to students wishing to begin the bachelor’s degree business track. In spring, two different business classes will be offered. Online class options will also be available.

According to Wong, the target market for the program is working professionals, so classes will be offered in evenings to accommodate those who have job and family obligations. Staff also aims to limit the number of days classes are offered each week for the same reason.

“The idea of launching is for people who are place-bound. They have work obligations, family obligations, a really good job they’ve had for 15 years. They don’t even have the ability to go to Incline Village to get a degree,” Wong said. “I want to make sure there’s consistency no matter where somebody takes a class.”

Although LTCC is on the quarter system, those enrolled in the Global Business Management program would follow the semester system, as Sierra Nevada College is a semester school. It is possible, therefore, for LTCC students to take both quarter and semester classes simultaneously. Sierra Nevada College fall classes begin Friday, Aug. 22, and LTCC fall classes begin Sept. 19.

Sierra Nevada College offers a $382 per credit rate and accepts transfer credits, so students only pay for courses needed to graduate. Upper-level tuition is as low as $17,190, depending on courses needed and financial aid.

“I’m really excited that we’re launching this in the LTCC and South Shore community, serving the higher education needs of the Lake Tahoe Basin,” Wong said.

LTCC is hosting two open houses for students to learn more about the program. Sessions will be student-focused, providing them with the opportunity to learn about the program, application and registration process. According to Wong, if students bring unofficial transcripts, they could potentially apply and be provisionally admitted that same evening.

Open houses are July 27 and Aug. 10. Both events will be held at 5 p.m. in the Aspen Room on the LTCC campus.

“We are very excited about the possibilities of this partnership [and even more degree opportunities moving forward] for the community and for students,” Michelle Risdon, interim vice president of academic affairs at LTCC, said in an email.

Sierra Nevada College and LTCC are on track to continue their partnership. In January, LTCC is planning to offer two more bachelor’s programs: psychology and education.
