Republican Gov. Brian Sandoval announced the resignation of state public schools superintendent Dr. James Guthrie Friday.
Guthrie handed in his resignation Friday. He was appointed superintendent by Sandoval in March of last year.
Guthrie was the first appointed superintendent. Previously, superintendents were chosen by the State Board of Education.
In a statement, the governor thanked Guthrie for his service and wished him well.
Deputy Superintendent for Teaching and Learning Rorie Fitzpatrick will serve as interim superintendent.
Guthrie irked Democrats on legislative money committees earlier this month when he said class size shouldn’t be a concern. Democrats have put class size near the top of their priority lists for fixing problems with Nevada education.
