LTUSD graduation, dropout rates mirror positive state trend

The percentage of Lake Tahoe Unified School District students who earned a diploma inched higher this year according to data released Tuesday by the California Department of Education.

The high school graduation rate rose and the dropout rate decreased in LTUSD during the 2011-12 school year.

Those South Shore numbers mirror a statewide trend. Almost eight out of 10 California students graduated last year from public schools, up 1.4 percent from 2010-11.

In LTUSD, almost 90 percent of the students who started high school in 2008-09 graduated with their class in 2012 — up from 86 percent the previous year.

The district-wide dropout rate decreased from 10.5 percent in 2010-11 to 8.3 percent in 2011-12.

“There are great things happening in California’s schools every day, and the upward climb of our graduation rate bears that out,” State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson said in a press release.

“While I am glad to announce that we are moving in the right direction, the fact remains that we must keep moving to ensure that every California student graduates ready to succeed in the world they will find outside our classrooms.”

African-American and Hispanic students made the largest gains in California graduation rates. In LTUSD, white and Filipino students boasted the highest graduation rates at 91.4 and 89.5 percent respectively.

Graduation and dropout rates for counties, districts and schools across California were calculated based on four-year cohort information using the state’s California Longitudinal Pupil Achievement Data System, according to a press release.

These data help determine whether schools met targets for Adequate Yearly Progress under the federal school accountability system. The cohort dropout rate is calculated for high school students and do not account for middle school dropouts, according to the release.
