Letter to the editor: You be the judge on prescribed burns

I am adamantly opposed to prescribed burns because there are other means of chipping or harvesting excess fuels that do not pollute our air, adversely affect our water quality and destroy the homes and lives of wildlife.

What once was a beautiful drive from my home in Glenbrook up Highway 50 toward Spooner Summit has turned into a “road rage” drive for me as I view the outrageous devastation of the north side of the canyon. Hundreds of health trees and a whole mountainside of precious ground cover were recently blighted and left an ugly charred remains under the guise of a controlled burn. I ask myself, what if an individual or company were responsible for this type of wanton destruction of our wonderful environment? What gives any governmental agency this abusive power to destroy with no recourse? If an individual cuts down a single tree, he or she is subject to fines and imprisonment. Yet, a governmental agency can devastate an entire mountainside without recourse? Tahoe Regional Planning Agency, where are you?

Next time you are driving toward Spooner Summit, you be the judge of whether this prescribed burn was necessary.
