Letter to the editor: Paid parking is a bad idea

We have been homeowners at Tahoe since the ‘60s and have always cared to keep our precious lake the desirable gem that it is for all to enjoy. The imminent plan to put in kiosk parking meters is a bad idea on many levels: It will fall short of the expected revenues, annoy the residents and probably ensure the replacement of the City Council.

People try to avoid paying for parking whenever possible. Given a choice, most will choose to dine, shop or enjoy recreation where parking is free — even if it means driving out of the local area. It seems your entire tourism industry could be affected by this paid parking plan. There are many people who live in South Lake Tahoe who struggle to get by. Imagine the single mother with a low-paying job with few choices for quality time with her kids. Because residential parking would require a permit in some places, she would need to pay for parking at the beach. This is rather discriminatory in our book.

Please rethink your idea for adding to the general fund. Increasing the coffers by a meager 1 percent (if all goes as projected) isn’t worth enraging thousands of residents and visitors. It will certainly tarnish the image of South Lake Tahoe, once a friendly and welcoming place.
