Bicyclist and skateboarder injured in South Tahoe crash

A 20-year-old South Lake Tahoe resident was airlifted to Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno Wednesday night after a collision with a skateboarder near Heavenly Village.

Steven Magelssen was riding a bicycle west in the center lane of U.S. Highway 50 about 8:30 p.m. when he rode through a stoplight while making a left turn onto Heavenly Village Way, according to a Thursday statement from police.

Magelssen struck 23-year-old South Lake Tahoe resident Pablo Bobadilla, who was riding his skateboard south across U.S. Highway 50 in the crosswalk, police said.

“Both parties were injured in the collision. Bobadilla was taken to Barton Memorial Hospital for treatment of cuts and abrasions,” according to the statement. “Magelssen however, who was not wearing a helmet, was injured more severely. Magelssen was unconscious when police and medics arrived. He was bleeding from the head. He regained and lost consciousness several times at the scene prior to being transported away.”

After being taken to Baron Memorial Hospital in South Lake Tahoe, Magelssen was flown to Renown due to the severity of his injuries.

Police found Magelssen at fault in the collision for running the red light and violating a pedestrian’s right of way in a marked crosswalk.
