Fire Fest to encourage safety practices

Fire Fest, an event that will teach people about a variety of fire-safety factors, returns to Lake Tahoe Airport Saturday.

Local fire departments and government agencies will be on hand from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. to demonstrate fire safety and fire prevention measures.

Lake View Fire Protection District public information officer Leona Allen said members of the Lake Tahoe Basin Fire Academy will set up life a safety trailer to teach children about home safety.

The demonstration will show how stoves can catch on fire, how to escape a house fire and how to use fire extinguisher.

“One of the biggest things is we want to make it family-oriented,” Allen said. “It is all about public safety education.”

Allen said the program will also tackle gas and propane safety, as well as helicopter etiquette. CALSTAR will also be on site to give demonstrations.

Fire Fest started in the 1990s with fire agencies in the area coming together to promote Fire Prevention Month, which is October, Allen said.

“One of the biggest (attractions) is the fire sprinkler demonstrations, where we burn down one shed that has a sprinkler system and one does not,” Allen said.

There also will be a demonstration on vehicle extrication in a mock traffic accident and firefighters will show how they cut people out of mangled vehicles.

Children can try their hand at using fire hoses, and the fire department will have firefighting apparatuses.

“We’ve also developed some home energy conservation (demonstrations) to this and recycling and water conservation,” Allen said, adding there will be wildland fire safety and prevention information provided by the U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit.

Additional information, such as the booths for South Tahoe Refuse and Recycling, El Dorado County Search and Rescue and the Humane Society, will also be at Fire Fest.

The event is free and food will be available for purchase.
