Everyone has an invite to MC Aesop’s birthday bash

A member of one of California’s most well-respected underground hip-hop groups is set to celebrate his birthday with a show at the South Shore this weekend.

Rapper Aesop is a longtime member of the Living Legends crew, which spawned artists including The Grouch and Murs after forming in the early 1990s.

“The Living Legends crew is a family of independent hip hop creators,” according to the a press release from promoters of th weekend show. “From primary earth bases in Los Angeles and Oakland, the Legends extend worldwide and beyond.”

Aesop, who was born Derrick McElroy and has gone by various monikers throughout his career, is now performing under the name Black Aesop. He is currently working on a new EP, according to an August article in The Fresno Bee.

“My self-titled EP is definitely a departure from my old sound but has a very similar feel that fans of mine will dig into,” McElroy said in the article. “I have seven full-length releases, so I felt it was time to change things up a bit. Expect some rock/punk-influenced songs as well a some very jazz-heavy ones.”
