Hank III bassist mixes punk and hillbilly tunes at the South Shore

Punk rock and country music don’t typically get along, but a one-man band performing at the South Shore next week brings the disparate genres together into a snarling mass known as “Hellbilly.”

Joe Buck Yourself; who takes his name from his attitude on life, as well as a somewhat infamous sports announcer; has performed with Hank Williams III’s country act, as well as his metal project, Assjack. The Kentucky-born musician writes songs with titles like “Devil is on His Way,” “Born to Scare” and “Are You My Enemy.” Each lives up to the “Hellbilly” classification — fast, loud and in your face.

“The once anti-Nashville based Joe Buck gained notoriety as the guitarist of Th’ Legendary Shack Shakers,” according to his profile on Bucket City Agency, an agency which he founded. “As Hank III’s villainous sideman onstage, the snarling upright bass player became infamously recognizable.

The Shack Shakers grew their following through relentless touring. Joe Buck Yourself appears to be doing the same.

“This unique blend of hellbilly punk rock ain’t your grandma’s hillbilly music,” according to the profile.
