Forest Service awards Round Hill Pines permit

The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit is awarding local business operators Bob and Tammy Hassett a special use permit to operate Round Hill Pines Resort.

Four bids were submitted to operate the beach resort and marina, located between Stateline and South Lake Tahoe. The Hassetts’ proposal emerged as the top bid, the Forest Service said in a news release announcing its decision Friday.

“We’re eager to move forward with the Hassetts in offering an array of recreation opportunities at this beautiful lakefront resort,” said Nancy Gibson, supervisor for the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit. “I’d like to thank all four bidders for taking the time to prepare their proposals and for their enthusiasm about Lake Tahoe recreation.”

The Hassetts will operate Round Hill Pines under a 30-year special use permit that allows their lease fees to the government to be offset through investments in the property.

The Hassetts propose to improve the resort’s highway entrance and entry road as well as to build new restrooms and showers.

In the resort’s upper cabin complex, they propose to rehabilitate the historic lodge to include food service; create a new group gathering area overlooking the lake; and build new cabins to replace the historic cabins.

In the lower resort and beach area, the Hassetts are proposing a special event pavilion; upgrades to the outdoor pool; and a new day-use parking lot. New overnight accommodations would include yurt-like structures and tent camping. A new day lodge would replace the existing restaurants and include a restaurant and bar, space for special events and a camp store.

All proposals for new activities at the site require a National Environmental Policy Act analysis and public involvement. All improvements must include water quality best management practices and meet Forest Service guidelines for accessibility and visual standards.
