Winter pile burning season begins

California State Parks has begun the 2013-14 winter pile burning season in the Lake Tahoe area. Pile burning operations are projected to extend through May, weather conditions permitting.

The planned pile burning locations include designated sites within four Lake Tahoe Basin State Parks Burton Creek State Park adjacent to Tahoe City, Sugar Pine Point State Park adjacent to Tahoma, Emerald Bay State Park and Washoe Meadows State Park adjacent to North Upper Truckee and Meyers.

Pile burning is an important part of forest management. It reduces fuel loading and creates opportunities for vegetation regeneration and understory ecological enhancement. As a management technique comparison with chipping, pile burning mimics natural processes and promotes nutrient cycling and regeneration. Pile burning accomplishes hazardous fuel reduction in areas where it may be undesirable to bring in heavy equipment for chipping. Chipping is an important tool as well, one of many tools used in the stewardship of our forest resources.

California State Parks only initiates pile burning on permissive burn days and under predicted favorable weather conditions to protect air quality and prevent smoke impacts upon neighboring communities.

Other land management agencies within the Lake Tahoe Basin share property boundaries with California State Parks and also perform pile burning during the same season. Please contact each respective agency with questions or concerns you may have.

Public representation is important to California State Parks; we exist to serve the people of California and we encourage you to contact us.
