January is National Mentoring Month

January is National Mentoring Month and Tahoe Youth & Family Services wants to invite you to be a mentor.

Mentoring helps youth and teens because it guarantees that there is someone who cares for them and they are not alone in their day-to-day challenges. Think back to childhood. Did you know how to plan for college, research a subject or study for a test? Do you remember looking for your first job? These things seem simple now, but they weren’t always so simple. To a young person they can be a mystery. Mentors provide mentees with the gift of having an experienced friend to help them through a number of situations. Mentors provide support for education, day-to-day living, and in the workplace. Statistics tell us that about 40 percent of a youth’s or teen’s waking hours are spent without companionship or supervision. Mentors provide valuable opportunities for free time.

In addition, students who meet regularly with a mentor are 52 percent less likely to skip a day of school, 46 percent less likely than peers to start using illegal drugs and 27 percent less likely to start drinking, according to a public/private ventures study of Big Brothers Big Sisters.

TYFS is currently accepting youth ages 4-17 who need a mentor. We are also looking for adults who would like to be mentors. Our mentoring program covers the South Lake Tahoe area, Markleeville and Woodfords in Alpine Co., as well as the Minden and Gardnerville area. Contact our mentor coordinators to find out more about our program and how you can get started. In Alpine County, contact Betty Hathaway at 530-694-9459 or betty@tahoeyouth.org. In South Lake Tahoe or Douglas County, contact Emily Bennett at 530-694-9459 or emily@tahoeyouth.org.
