For the second year running, the Tahoe Keys Polar Bear Plunge to benefit local charities was a great success!
This year 22 ran into the cold water for a good cause. Swimmers and sponsors brought in more than $1,100 for Christmas Cheer, a local food bank in South Lake Tahoe. Spectators, who were asked to donate a nonperishable item of food, brought in enough items to fill one of the food bank’s tall donation bins overflowing with food.
There were so many helping hands in this project, beginning with the Tahoe Keys Association who donated their time, money and venue, we want to include Cakes on the Lake on Emerald Bay Road, Grand Central Pizza and Pasta at the Kings Center and Raleys at the “Y” for sumptious food and bottled water donations.
Prizes consisted of six, unlimited-use, day ski passes to Diamond Peak, donated by Community Ink, Inc. and gift cards donated by Meeks Lumber, Lake of the Sky Outfitters (at the Y) and Pet Station. The snowman building contest had to be shelved due to a lack of “workable supply,” so four lucky swimmers were given prizes beginning with best costume and first head under the water.
Other helping hand awards go to Les Schwab Tires, who sponsored fully one-half of the swimmers; Ukeleles of Tahoe, providing theme music indoors and out at the beach; Ahern Rentals and Staples for heaters and signs and the Tahoe Daily Tribune, KRNV Channel 4 Reno and KOLO Channel 8 Reno. All of the latter provided exemplary media coverage for Christmas Cheer Food Bank and the Keys annual event.
