Fire department offers safety tips

The South Lake Tahoe Firemen’s Association and the South Lake Tahoe Fire Department will host the Annual Fill the Boot for Burns fundraiser Friday and Saturday.

Firefighters will be at the Raley’s shopping center at the Y and also at the intersection of Lake Tahoe Boulevard and Park Avenue near Stateline Friday from 5-9 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The money will benefit burn recovery programs, including Firefighters Kids Camp and Little Heroes Preschool Burn Camp.

The fire department would also like to offer the following tips to residents:

Tip No. 64: Now that the snow has melted, it is a good time to take a walk around your house, and look for any damage that icicles may have caused. Be sure to check the gas meter and any other utility lines that may have been damaged. It’s time to begin cleaning up any loose debris on your roof, gutters, and around your property, such as pine needles, pine cones, and dead vegetation.

Be sure to properly store any snow removal equipment properly, and get your chimney and your furnace cleaned.

Tip No. 29: If a fire broke out tonight while you were sleeping, would you and your family get out alive? Today is a great time to develop a home fire escape plan. Teach it to and practice it with your family on a regular basis. Check your smoke detector and replace the battery at least once a year.

If there is a fire, teach everyone to get out and stay out. It’s your best fire-safe response.
