Search and rescue seeks volunteers

The El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue program is looking for volunteers.

The program is based in South Lake Tahoe and volunteers been undergoing basic training for the past two months.

Team members are being trained in technical rescue, basic radio communications, land navigation, basic survival, helicopter operations and preparation for rescue responses. Several volunteers participated in swift water and water safety training April 27 and 28. Volunteers learned basic safety around the water, basic recovery methods and technical rope systems used to aid in the recovery of victims in a water environment.

In this past month, a team has been organized to specialize in technical rope rescue. The team, which is comprised of members from the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office and Douglas County Nevada Sheriff’s Office, has been organized to train and have a vast knowledge of rope rescue techniques in order to effectively respond to low and high angle rescue incidents, according to a press release.

Last year proved to be a very busy year for the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office, which responded to more than 90 calls for service. The team is expecting this trend to continue into 2013, with almost 20 calls so far, according to the release.

El Dorado County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue Team based out of South Lake Tahoe is an all-volunteer based team. The El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office is currently accepting applications for volunteers. Anyone with a passion for the outdoors who has experience with hiking and recreating in the backcountry is encouraged to apply.

Anyone interested in volunteering should call Deputy Greg Almos at 530 573-3058 or email almosg@edso.org.
