Sir Richard’s English Toffee opened Aug. 1 in South Lake Tahoe.
The business is the first Class A business in the Tahoe basin established under the new California Cottage Food Operation law, which went into effect Jan. 1, a press release stated. The toffee is made by Rick and Suzanne Soule in their home and sold directly to the public.
Sir Richard’s English Toffee is a family recipe handed down from Rick Soule’s mother, Barbara, who made the toffee for hostess gifts and Christmas parties, the release stated. When Rick Soule was a teenager, Barbara went back to work and he took over as toffee-maker. Over the years, more and more people asked him where they could buy the toffee and, when California passed the Cottage Food Operation bill, Rick and Suzanne decided to start selling to the public, according to the release.
