Kudos & Kindness

Shaved heads are sign of generous hearts

It is with a grateful heart that I once again thank the great community of South Lake Tahoe for the fantastic support we had at the 3rd annual St. Baldrick’s Event at the South Tahoe Ice Arena on March 1. It was another extremely successful fundraiser for Childhood Cancer Research and the energy was as high as the dollars raised to help children fighting this terrible disease. So far, it looks like this year’s event will raise approximately $41,000, just a little shy of our $50,000 goal. We are thrilled with the enthusiasm and support by so many groups from the community. From Van Oleson at the South Tahoe Ice Arena and the Tahoe Blue to Pete Sonntag and Nancy McCoy from Vail Resorts and Heavenly and Kirkwood Ski Patrol, to the Tahoe Grizzlies, doctors, nurses, dentists, Chiropractors, firefighters, teachers and friends of both Bailey Johnson and Caitlyn Drennan, (who are both survivors of Neuroblastoma), we say a big Thank You.

We couldn’t put on such a wonderful event without the help of the Northern Nevada Children’s Cancer Foundation’s and the many hair stylists, volunteers, the photography of AJ Marino, Traci Kennedy, face painter Gina and DJ Bob and the Tribune.

It takes a community to make a difference. South Lake Tahoe really stepped up to the plate again this year! Donations can still be made at http://www.stbaldricks.org/participants/mypage/664057 to help find a cure for pediatric cancer.

So when you see those bald heads around town, say THANK YOU!

Thank you for paint donation

A big shoutout to Kelly Moore Paints for donating 15 buckets to Sierra House Elementary School’s after school enrichment program for the Tahoe Bucket Beats. Fifteen kids are learning to play African, Brazilian, and Latin drum rhythms. We drum on buckets instead of drums. Without this donation this wouldn’t be possible. Thank You Kelly Moore! You are helping kids learn through music.

Nordic Ski Team thanks community for support

Despite a season of below normal snow fall the team had a great year.

The team would like to thank the South Shore community for their support throughout the season. Special thanks go out to Vail Resorts, which support the team through in-kind services at the Kirkwood Cross Country Center, along with the ski technique and coaching assistance provided by manager Debbi Waldear. The team also got in some training along Blue Lakes Road, thanks to the grooming provided by Lake Tahoe Adventures. Thanks goes out to the Lake Tahoe Community College and Tyler Cannon for allowing them to practice on the groomed trails when snow conditions allowed. Snow conditions prevented the team from setting track and skiing on the high school property this year, but we would like to thank the Shearers, and Sierra Mountain Sports for donating the use of a snowmobile, which we will use next season.

Thanks also goes out to Lake of the Sky Outfitters for assisting with the purchase of equipment and waxes, and Meek’s for donating materials to assist in the construction of training apparatus for conditioning throughout the year. Finally, a big thank you goes out to our great parents who help with all sorts of needs during the season.

The team is already looking forward to the 2014 – 2015 season, and improving upon our final results. GO VIKINGS!

B&B Thanks LTCC Leadership Team

Serving with big smiles and kind words, the Lake Tahoe Community College Leadership Team’s sponsor crew served over 95 community members at Bread & Broth’s March 10 evening dinner. B&B would like to thank the LTCC Leadership Team for once again supporting our goal of feeding the less fortunate of our community by Adopting A Day of Nourishment.

“LTCC truly appreciates the opportunity to serve our community by participating in Bread & Broth,” said Kurt Green, dean of instruction. “The heartfelt ‘thank yous’, the smiles and the staff camaraderie made this an uplifting experience for all.”

Joining Kurt in assisting at the dinner were fellow LTCC Leadership Team members Virginia Boyar, dean; Dave Burba, IT director and Michelle Sower, director.

The B&B volunteers truly enjoyed working alongside the LTCC sponsor crew members who were eager to help in any way with the meal’s setup, serving and cleanup. Their desire to support the community is evident in the quality education they strive to provide and their efforts outside the classroom to improve the lives of our community members.

To help B&B as a donor or sponsor, contact Carol at (530) 542- 2876 or carolsgerard@aol.com.

Thanks to many who help fill the Family Resource Center pantry

Spring has made it’s way to Tahoe, but the winter has left many a pantry empty and wanting for sufficient snow, jobs, and cash flow to keep us all warm and healthy. If it were not for our friends in the food business many more folks in this town would be going without. Thanks goes to our longtime supporters including Safeway, Grocery Outlet, and Bijou Community School families, and to our new partners in fighting hunger Raley’s and Lira’s. A debt of gratitude goes out to our community partners for their generous weekly donations of food to help us feed the many families in need this year.

Happy Spring from the board, staff, clients and volunteers at the South Lake Tahoe Family Resource Center.

Lake Tahoe Humane Society and SPCA thanks open house guests

The Lake Tahoe Humane Society and Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals thanks South Lake Tahoe for the great turnout at our open house and ribbon cutting on Feb. 25 in honor of “World Spay Day.”

TahoeChamber was present to officiate the ribbon cutting and Mayor Hal Cole cut the ribbon. It was a great turnout and a good start in the Lake Tahoe Humane Society’s mission to let the community learn about all their fantastic services, such as spay and neuter vouchers, emergency pet medical care assistance and an emergency pet food bank. Liz Maul, the Lake Tahoe Humane Society and SPCA education director, showed guests the incredible education programs provided, such as My Reading Buddy (every Wednesday at the South Lake Tahoe Branch of the El Dorado County Library at 4 p.m.) and the new VSI program, which encourages kids to take an interest in science. Additionally, funds for future programs were raised thanks to raffle items donated by local businesses including Tahoe Best Friends, Best In Show Pet Groomers, Heavenly Valley and Tahoe Blue Vodka. This was a great start to what will be an exciting year for the Lake Tahoe Humane Society and SPCA.
