Second Serving six years strong

Troy Matthews
Special to the Tribune

May marked six years since the inception of Bread & Broth’s Second Serving program, which offers hot meals free-of-charge for the community from the Lake Tahoe Community Presbyterian Church at 2733 Lake Tahoe Blvd. on Friday evenings from 4 to 5 p.m. The Second Serving program is an expansion of Bread & Broth’s Monday evening food service at Grace Hall of Saint Theresa Catholic Church located at 1041 Lyons Ave. in South Lake Tahoe.

A substantial amount of hard work from many dedicated volunteers has seen the Second Serving program grow from a soup kitchen in 2009 to the full meal offering that is provided today. The expanded food service program would not be possible without the support of the following community partners: Levon Touryan, Lake Tahoe Pizza Company; Rosie Cowen and Glenn Simpson, Blue Angel Café; Sheldon and Dan Tepper, Teps Villa Roma; Scott Craig, Riva Grill; Tim Halloran and Mark Vassau, Nepheles; Nick and Shandi, Ashmore Café Fiore; Steffen Moise, Ridge Tahoe; Keith Simpson, Rockwater; Bill Belair, Fresh Ketch; and Dave Davis, MontBleu.

Bread & Broth is a non-profit, all-volunteer program that feeds the hungry in the South Lake Tahoe community. A hot, well-balanced meal is provided twice a week at no charge to anyone who comes through the doors; meals are served without regard to religion, race, age or financial situation.

Since its beginning in 1989, Bread & Broth has become one of Saint Theresa parish’s most successful outreach programs. In the past 25 years, the program has been recognized as a major factor in the social fabric of the community: providing sustenance and a central gathering place for those in need, as well as a spirit of goodwill for those who volunteer.
