Hopeful Henry: Lost and found pets

I hope everyone had a great Memorial Day weekend. Every holiday weekend a ton of dogs go missing or get found and the one thing I noticed this past weekend is that most people don’t know what to do or who to report it to. So I thought this would be a good time to let everyone know the best way to handle this type of situation.

If you find a pet and they have identification tags, call the number on the tag first, if you get no response, take the next steps. If they have no tags call Eldorado Animal Services at 530-573-7925. They will pick up the found animal and take it to shelter until the owner is found. Keep in mind this will cost the owner some money to reclaim their pet. If you can hold onto the animal for a little while and would like to try find the owner, you can call the Lake Tahoe Humane Society office during business hours, which are Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., call 530-542-2857. If after hours call the 24/7 emergency number at 530-577-4521 and they will assist you in trying to find the owner. To get the assistance of the Lake Tahoe Humane Society, it is best if you can text a photo of the found pet with your contact information and the area where the pet was found, they will then post it on the Facebook page, which has a good success rate. They will not post your private information on the Facebook post as a safety precaution and will act as the middleman when owner is found. Text information to the 24/7 emergency number at 530-577-4521.

If you lose a pet, as soon as you realize your pet (cat or dog) is missing time is of the essence — don’t wait. The sooner you report the missing pet, the better your chances are of retrieving your pet. Call Eldorado Animal Services at 530-573-7925 to report missing pets, then contact the Lake Tahoe Humane Society at the office, if during business hours (Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.) 530-542-2857. If after hours call the 24/7 emergency number at 530-577-4521, also text to that number a photo of missing pet, where the pet was lost, when were lost and a full description of the animal including sex, age, size and if they are spayed or neutered. Once the Lake Tahoe Humane Society has posted your found or missing pet on Facebook, please check that posting often as this community is great about responding. Once you have taken all these steps place fliers around, sometimes pets wander fairly far away and someone may have picked up your pet. Also place something with your pet’s scent on it outside your house. The smell will help them find home. If you lose your dog on a trail or out in the wild, place a dog bed or blanket in the area last seen and check it often. Many dogs have been found this way by owners who find them snuggled up the blanket they put out.

Make sure your pets have collars with current I.D. tags with current contact information and check that the tags are legible.

Hoping this information helps with our community’s lost pets.

A special thank you to Tahoe-Douglas Fire Department that was nice enough to come to the Hike May 16 and share with everyone the importance of fire safety. Remember the Lake Tahoe Humane Society has free Emergency Pet Kits available at the office that you can pick one up anytime during business hours. These kits have all the information you need to prepare for a disaster including the window decals for your home, which inform the fire department that you have pets inside.
