El Dorado County is the sixth healthiest county in California, according to a national report.

The study published by the University or Wisconsin’s Population Health Institute and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation ranks counties in each state by looking at residents’ life expectancy and overall health.

El Dorado County had the sixth highest overall health conditions out of the 57 California counties. It scored high in the measures of morbidity and socioeconomic factors, as well as level of clinical care and health behaviors. El Dorado County ranked 24th when it came to physical environment because of limited access to health foods and a high percentage of fast-food restaurants compared to other counties in the state, according to the study.

“This is great news and something we can be proud of,” said Chris Weston, program manager II for the El Dorado Public Health Division. “We live in a beautiful, rural county that offers its residents good health overall.”

Health departments around the county are preparing for National Public Health Week, which starts on April 1. The campaign encourages individuals to take steps to improve community health. More information can be found at www.nphw.org.
