A bicycle parade that has become an annual tradition in South Lake Tahoe is scheduled to return this year — without a world record in tow.
The third annual Spirit Parade is scheduled for May 16 at 4 p.m. and will return the parade to its roots as an informal celebration of pedaling.
“It’s to celebrate to spirit of bicycling,” said Mark Cutright, chief slow roller for the Slow Rollers Bicycle Club, which organizes the parade. “That’s the whole reason behind it.”
Last year’s event drew about 1,200 people in an attempt to break the Guinness Book of World Records listing for longest single line of bicycles.
The number of riders at the South Lake Tahoe parade would have easily broken the record of 916, but Guinness did not recognize the attempt because requirements such as keeping bikes within a certain distance of each other and people riding single file were not met, Cutright said.
“It all added up to OK, try again,” Cutright said.
A second attempt at a world record is in the works, but a date has not been set. Cutright envisions the world record attempt launching from near the “Y” and heading northwest along the bike path passing Camp Richardson to make it easier for people to stay together.
This May’s Spirit Parade will travel from South Shore Bikes at 955 Emerald Bay Road to Mo’s Place at 3600 Lake Tahoe Blvd. A fire engine will lead the parade, which is also expected to have support from police and community service officers, Cutright said.
The event encourages people to let their freak flags fly.
Wolverine, Buzz Lightyear and Tigger have each been spotted at previous parades. A “Best in Show” award will again be handed out, based entirely on a popular vote from participants, Cutright said.
All bicyclists, not just superheroes and cartoon characters, are welcome, Cutright said.
He recommended people preregister for the Spirit Parade at Tahoe Sports Ltd., South Shore Bikes or Mad About Music to avoid congestion at the start of the parade. More information is available at www.slowrollers.org or by calling 530-544-3979.
