South Lake Tahoe police and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration recovered 61 pounds of unwanted prescription medication during a drug take-back program Saturday.
The amount of medication is the most collected by the police department since the program started three years ago, according to a statement from the city. Police have held the event six times in those three years.
According to the DEA, the National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day collected 50 percent more pills than the previous one, demonstrating the continued need for the opportunity to discard unwanted, unused and expired prescription drugs. Nationally, 742,497 pounds of prescription medication was collected and destroyed Saturday.
