Record temps expected this week

More record temperatures are expected in South Lake Tahoe this weekend as California braces for its second major heat wave this month.

The National Weather Service in Reno expects South Lake Tahoe to reach 87 degrees on Saturday. The heat would match the previous record for June 29, set in 1972, according to Sunday’s expected high of 88 degrees would also tie the record set in 1972 for June 30.

The real scorcher for the next couple days arrives Monday when the mercury is expected to reach 90 degrees, a mark that would beat the previous record, also set more than 30 years ago, by 4 degrees. Tuesday’s forecast of 89 degrees would break the previous record of 87 degrees, set in 1984.

The area is finally expected to drop out of the record books Wednesday when the forecasted high is expected to top out at 85 degrees.

Despite the relative heat, it could be far warmer.

Temperatures in Reno are expected to get into the triple digits Sunday through Tuesday. The Central Valley is expected to see temperatures above 100 degrees through Wednesday, with the hottest days on Monday and Tuesday. High temperatures in the valley at the beginning of the week will be between 105 and 112, according to the National Weather Service.

“Moisture moving up from the south will make it feel somewhat muggy and more uncomfortable than normal,” according to a weather statement by the agency. “Afternoon and evening thunderstorms are possible over the Sierra Nevada and southern Cascades mainly early next week.”

If the heat wave hits as forecast, it will be the second stretch this month where Lake Tahoe has broken temperatures records. The area broke records in early June when the temperatures reached into the upper 80s.
