As they entered St. Theresa’s Grace Hall on Oct. 7, Bread & Broth’s dinner guests were greeted by the smiling faces of the sponsor crew representing Heavenly Mountain and Kirkwood Resorts’ Marketing and Communications team. In addition to helping with the dinner’s setup and cleanup, Kelly Campbell, senior brand manager; Sally Gunter, communications manager; Ashley Smith, communications coordinator and Margo Stoney, graphic design specialist, generously filled each guest’s tray with baked salmon, roasted veggies and green salad.
“We were very happy to be able to help out with such an amazing organization that gives back to our community in such an impactful way. It was nice to see the smiles our actions put on people’s faces.” As the evening’s Adopt A Day of Nourishment sponsors, Heavenly and Kirkwood Resorts once again supported the efforts of Bread & Broth to feed the less fortunate of our south shore community both with their monetary donation from the Vail Echo Foundation and their employees volunteering at the dinner.
Bread & Broth is very grateful for the monthly Adopt A Day sponsorships hosted by Heavenly Mountain and Kirkwood Resorts. Every Monday, sponsorships feed more than 90 members of our community who are in need of a healthy and filling meal.

Fire Fest 2013 was a great success
The Fire Fest Committee sends a sincere thank you to everyone who worked hard to promote, and who came to enjoy, our 2013 event.
More than 100 volunteers; including the Lake Tahoe Basin Fire Academy, county, state, and federal firefighters and public and private agency staff; spent a busy Saturday, Sept. 28 presenting Fire Fest 2013. Added to those efforts were those of our local fire and emergency responders, staff members for the U.S. Forest Service helicopter, CareFlight, CALSTAR, K-Tahoe, the Tahoe Daily Tribune, Southwest Gas, South Tahoe Public Utlity District, South Tahoe Refuse, donations by dozens of local businesses and the Kiwanis with their savory barbecue. You can see why it’s hard to adequately thank everyone.
Hundreds of families attended this year. Through equipment demonstrations, Smokey Bear and Sparky, displays, handouts and lots of fun, we raised our community’s awareness about fire prevention, home safety and energy conservation.

The South Lake Tahoe High School Nordic Ski Team extends a big thank you to Meeks Lumber of South Lake Tahoe for their generous donation of materials. This lumber will be used by athletes to construct two roller boards for dry-land conditioning.
Meeks Lumber’s manager Buzz Bera dropped what he was doing and assisted with the selection of material to insure we got what we needed. His willingness to include us in the many requests his business receives demonstrates Meeks’ commitment to building healthy communities.
The Nordic race team competes in the California-Nevada Interscholastic Ski and Snowboard Federation league that has historically been dominated by Truckee and North Lake Tahoe. These two programs have benefitted from close proximity to training sites and other resources not available at the South Shore. It is our intent to create a comprehensive training center and program to allow student athletes to develop to their full potential.
The team has many needs. In addition to improved dry-land facilities, we are beginning to improve on-campus ski trails. We are in need of a snowmobile and track setter to improve our athletes’ ability to train locally. Also, many athletes do not have sufficient gear to train or compete on. Mrs. Dickinson’s third grade class at Bijou Community School would like to thank all of the wonderful volunteers at Farm Day for their efforts and hard work in making the day such a resounding success for Lake Tahoe Unified School District students.
On Sept. 24, children had a great time learning about nutrition, farm animal husbandry, soil health, the water cycle, apiculture (beekeeping) and many other topics. Wendy West of the U.C. Cooperative Extension-Central Sierra was very effective in coordinating the day for all of us. Both Wendy and our very own Beth Quandt worked hard to make certain all the teachers were instructed in the procedures, so the field trip ran smoothly.
The volunteers who assisted my class in our explorations were Mark and Joanne Bernard, Gray Kuzica with “Bees,” hydrologist Tracey Bishop with the water cycle and Sara Munday and Clark the goose at “Incredible Geese.” Master teacher Lynne Brosche and Teresa Thompson taught students about the anatomy of seeds. Alison Toy led us in an interactive discussion about what plants provide us with food in “What’s for Lunch.” Katherine Martinez and Christian Martinez, a brother and sister team, finished off the day by leading a wonderful game illustrating the USDA My Plate nutrition curriculum. Additionally, we’d like to thank our parent volunteer, Gylen Romero, for helping my students learn. As a long time educator, I’ve learned that every opportunity to enrich my students’ lives is a boon. Farm Day was particularly valuable.
