Obituary: Joseph Leonard Bornino

Joseph Leonard Bornino, native son of Ohio and resident of South Lake Tahoe, died Sunday, January 26 peacefully in his home at the age of 86 with his wife of 40 years, Margaret (Marge). Joe was born Dec. 4, 1927 in Cleveland, Ohio. He was the third son of Italian immigrants. Bornino served his country as Military Police in the US Army. After his service, Joe had various sales jobs and owned a religious articles store in Elyria, Ohio before solidifying his career with the US Postal system. Joe started working for the US Postal service by sorting mail on trains running between Buffalo and Chicago before aerial transportation and computer technology modernized to the mail system we have today. After moving from Ohio to California in 1968, he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting at Long Beach State University. Joe eventually became the Postmaster in Bell, California. Joe capped his career by becoming Post Master in South Lake Tahoe (1982-1985) after working 33 years for the US Postal system. Joe’s interest in history was evident with his collection of fact sheets for each stamp in his collection. In addition to being a diligent collector Joe encouraged stamp collecting, as he collected soaked, dried and traded thousands of stamps for local stamp clubs each year. Joe Bornino loved living in snowy Tahoe, but found warmth of friends and entertainment in the local casinos. Joe is survived by his wife Marge, his sister Rose, his children Carmen, Joseph, Lydia, Robert, Gina, three step sons, Bob, John and Bill, 9 grandchildren,10 great grandchildren and his first wife, Vincenza. The Bornino family is appreciative of the support and help they received from the Barton Hospice Association and contributions to the association may be made at http://www.bartonhealth.org/main/hospice.aspx
