FREDERICK P. JOHNSTON
Our beloved Frederick P. Johnston, 73, of Sun City, AZ, succumbed to pneumonia in a hospice with family close by on Feb. 21, 2014.
Fred was a devoted family man and is survived by his wife Gloria of 52 years, daughters Michelle (Jim) King, sons Mark (Rebecca) and Eric (Ana), sister Mildred (Bob) Bailey and grandchildren Leena and Deric. Fred was a loving father, husband, grandfather, brother, and inspirational friend to many.
Fred was born in Eastport Idaho, lived in South Lake Tahoe for 45 years, and spent his entire life serving others. He was a United States postal carrier for over 20 years, a hospitality business owner, a building custodian, a baseball coach, church and school volunteer, Lake Tahoe tour guide, and popular dispatcher for Nevada casinos. The celebrated author of popular hiking book “Favorite Tahoe Hikes,” Fred loved the wilderness and spent many hours hiking and fishing in the back country. Fred loved music, adored Sinatra, and was also a stellar, self-taught songwriter, pianist, and poet himself. Known to many as a thought-provoking philosopher and historian, “Freddy” (as he was called by his softball teammates) encouraged, inspired, and challenged all he encountered. God rest his soul.
A special thank you to the good people of Banner Hospital for their loving care and support during Fred’s hospitalization.
Fred’s ashes will be placed at Happy Homestead in South Lake Tahoe, CA some time in the spring of 2014.
