Rodney William Nafie, 57, passed away Sunday morning, July 6, 2014 in Gardnerville, Nevada. Rodney was born on December 3, 1956 in Southern California. Rodney’s parents, Howard and Geraldine Nafie, moved to South Lake Tahoe in 1958. Rodney always had fond boyhood memories of playing in the undeveloped forests, meadows, and streams along Glenwood Way and Pioneer Trail in South Tahoe. As a pre-teen he had the good fortune to travel by RV across the United States and Canada with his brother and grandparents, Chester and Hazel Patterson, also of South Lake Tahoe. Rodney was a 1975 graduate of George Whittell High School.
After graduation Rodney became a land surveyor, working many years with his dad throughout the Tahoe Basin, the Carson Valley, and later in the Tracy, California area.
On July 11, 1981, Rodney married Cheryl Giedt of South Lake Tahoe and the newlywed couple made their home in Al Tahoe. Rodney enjoyed skiing Tahoe’s slopes, playing basketball, riding motorcycles, water sports, home improvement projects, working on his truck, and caring for the family’s prized Dachshunds, Jasmine and Lilly. In later life Rodney loved to garden; when he and Cheryl moved to Gardnerville, the couple’s small yard overflowed with gigantic tomatoes, onions, squash and other fruits and vegetables.
Rodney is survived by his loving wife, Cheryl, of Gardnerville; his mother, Geraldine Nafie of Stateline; his brother and sister-in-law, Jeffrey and Artha Nafie of Mill Creek, Washington and many nieces and nephews.
Rodney was a charming, outgoing person who made friends easily. He was always willing to stop and talk to people; like his grandfather Chester, he rarely knew a stranger. He will be truly missed by all.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made in Rodney’s name to the Food Bank of No. Nevada.
