James B. “Jimmy” Townsend
July 16, 1928 – July 21, 2014
Longtime Tahoe resident Jimmy Townsend passed away peacefully on Monday, July 21, at Barton Memorial Hospital. Jimmy first came to Lake Tahoe in 1948 as a summer hire with the US Forest Service. After graduating from San Jose State and serving in the Korean War, he became a year-round resident at the lake in 1955. While working at Harrah’s, Jimmy met Mary D. and were married. They have the distinction of being the first couple married by Father John Grace at St. Theresa’s Catholic Church. Jimmy worked at Harrah’s for 36 years, ultimately holding the position of Shift Manager. He was an avid fisherman and spent many hours on the lake trolling for Mackinaw and Kokanee. He also loved sports, and enjoyed watching college football, the 49ers and the Giants. However, his greatest joy was spending time with his grandchildren.
Jimmy is survived by his wife Mary, sons Paul (Ruby), Matt (Kelly), and Chris, grandchildren Erik, Sharae, and Hannah, brother Neil (Betty), nephew John, niece Laura; cousins Jerry Boyd (Julie) and Joyce Boedecker; sister-in-law Theresa Moore and nieces Angela Moore (Werner Jurinka) and Elizabeth Moore (Michael Sharp); and many other loving friends and family.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. Theresa’s Religious Education Program. Condolences may be offered at services to be held at 10:00 am on Friday July 25, at St. Theresa Catholic Church on Lyons Avenue.
