LOGAN SHOALS — A driver and a dog were killed in a solo-vehicle crash just northeast of Cave Rock Wednesday morning.

The driver, 75-year-old Darlene M. Hall of Skyforest, was declared dead at the scene. Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District (TDFPD) personnel had to extricate Hall about an hour after the incident was first reported.

The incident occurred a few minutes after 8:30 a.m. Initial scanner traffic indicated Hall might have been trapped in the vehicle, a Gray 2009 GMC Yukon, but first responders minutes later indicated the driver was possibly deceased.

Nevada Highway Patrol (NHP) officers confirmed at the scene Hall was deceased.

Markers placed by NHP investigators at the scene appeared to indicate that the driver, who was traveling northeast on Highway 50, veered off the road to the right and traveled a couple of dozen yards before striking several large boulders head-on. The SUV came to rest on its wheels in a slope just a few yards off the roadway. An NHP press release Thursday stated it was still unclear what caused Hall to drive off the roadway. Alcohol or drugs were not suspected to be a factor.

There did not appear to be any signs of braking on the roadway leading to the path NHP officers marked off the road.

Traffic heading northeast was blocked off until about 9:30 a.m., when controlled traffic was re-established with one lane open in each direction.

One dog was reported dead in the incident and a second was seriously injured. The surviving dog was taken to a local veterinarian for treatment, according to a press release.

Trooper Chris Austin of the Nevada Highway Patrol’s Carson City substation is investigating this incident.
