Anne “Annie” Elisabeth Thomas

Anne “Annie” Elisabeth Thomas passed away peacefully on Friday, April 29th after a hard fought battle with cancer. Annie was born in Batavia, New York on December 16th, 1955, to Anne Elisabeth McGee (Zehrung) and Herman Fisher. Annie’s road in life led her to Santa Cruz, California with her mom, sister Janet, and brothers Joe and Ray. Her mom remarried and Annie gained a new father, Thomas Edward Zehrung Sr. Tom had a handful of children himself; Patricia, Deborah, Thomas Jr., Teresa, and Jeannette. After a time, the family grew even larger with the addition of the youngest sister Millie, and the adoption Daniel. As the eldest of eleven siblings, Annie shouldered a lot of the mothering and nurturing role, helping to ease the burden on her mother. She provided the finest example for her siblings to aspire. Along came a handsome boy, Shaun Cole Thomas Sr., who stole Annie’s heart. The couple married in Santa Cruz, California in 1974 and then moved to South Lake Tahoe, CA. Annie worked for Slakey Brothers until 1978 when the young couple started their own business venture- Kingsbury Automotive. The couple also grew their family; first Shaun Cole Thomas Jr in 1977, then Elise Nicole Thomas in 1986, and finally Spencer Cole Thomas in 1987. For 38 years Kingsbury Auto has been the typical mom and pop shop; where the family works together. Annie’s presence at the shop is sorely missed, by the family and community. On Sept. 7, 2013 Annie was blessed to have Shaun Cole Thomas Jr. marry his high school sweetheart, Anna Pauline Nott, who officially became her daughter. As Annie’s large family continued to grow, she accepted each new member with loving open arms. Annie always had an insatiable quest for knowledge. If there was something she didn’t know how to do, she would study up and learn how to get it done. She was never one to be daunted by a difficult task. So many of her friends and family will tell you, “she is the strongest woman I know.” Annie loved to be in the mountains, but also enjoyed spending time at the coast. For many years, she was so passionate with her volunteer work for Douglas County Search and Rescue, even training two search dogs, Shadow and Gini. She went above and beyond in training and in organizational management, and continues to receive awards for her accomplishments in Search and Rescue both locally and internationally. A Celebration of Life service will be held later this summer, date and location pending, all are welcomed.
