Wednesday, July 20, marked the grand opening for Flight Deck Sports Bar & Grill. The restaurant inside Lake Tahoe Airport was closed for approximately three weeks while ownership changed hands and renovations were completed.

Former owners Tom and Diane Miller were looking to move on and sell the restaurant, according to Tina Shannon, who is now the current owner, along with her husband Mike. The Millers closed shop on June 1, and the Shannons took over on June 8, working on renovations before reopening this week.

“It’s definitely different. We’ve remodeled and cleaned up,” Tina said. “We have a new kitchen, a new carpet and new furniture. We just spruced it up.”

The restaurant now offers the feel of a sports bar — six TVs around the room each have different games on. Tina expressed interest in selling special Sunday tickets when NFL season comes around. Food selection — American pub fare — rounds out the sports theme.

One of the most iconic parts of the restaurant, according to Tina, is the view.

“We’ve got a great balcony. There are six or seven tables out here on the balcony that overlook the runway and the beautiful views. I can’t say it enough,” she added.

The Shannons are planning additional renovations on the balcony area later this summer.

According to Tina, it just “needs to be freshened up a bit.”

There are other small changes in the works as well, including adding more sports memorabilia to the restaurant’s walls.

“We want to get people out here to see what the airport has to offer,” she said. “A lot of people don’t know the cool planes that come in and out of here.”

She hopes construction on the airport lobby does not deter people from coming, as Flight Deck Sports Bar & Grill is still open during the improvements.

“It’s a great location with a great local vibe and a lot of good customers. With beautiful views, it’s a one-of-a-kind place,” Tina said.
