Police urge caution following car thefts

South Lake Tahoe police are urging people to lock their cars, remove valuables from their vehicles, activate security devices and not leave their keys in their cars following a series of attempted and successful vehicle thefts this month. The thief or thieves appear to target vans, said Lt. Brian Williams in a Tuesday statement.

On Thursday a 1992 Dodge van was stolen from 2111 South Ave. and later recovered.

On Sunday a 1993 dark green Ford Aerostar van was stolen from 861 Emerald Bay Road and has not been located. The vehicle has “bondo” on the left rear quarter panel and has separating paint. It has a California license plate number of 4BLP370.

Also on Sunday, a black 2000 Ford E-350 was broken into at 924 Emerald Bay Road and the ignition was damaged. The suspect or suspects were not able to steal the vehicle, Williams said.

On Tuesday a white, 1-ton, extended-length 2006 Ford E-350 diesel van was stolen from 976 Emerald Bay Road and has not been located. It has a California license plate number of 8G35339 and has the number 16 in 4” block letters near both front doors and on the rear of the van.

Also on Tuesday, someone attempted to steal a 1989 Ford Bronco from 976 Emerald Bay Road. The ignition of the vehicle was damaged, but the suspect or suspects were unsuccessful in stealing the vehicle, Williams said.
