Ralph Lewis Naines passed away on July 5, 2013, at his home in South Lake Tahoe, from complications of Melanoma.
A native San Franciscan; born on July 16, 1946, second son of Joseph and Helen Naines. He was a graduate of St. Anne and St. Ignatius High School (class of ’64). A competitive swimmer at SI, Ralph set several AAA/CIF San Francisco individual 50-yard freestyle and team 200-yard medley swimming records in 1963 and 1964. He received an AA-Fire Science degree from City College of SF, joined the San Francisco Fire Department in 1971, proudly served as a firefighter for 28 years, and retired in 1998.
Ralph was a unique and very special person with a fun-loving attitude and positive outlook on life. His family and friends will remember him for his optimistic spirit, good nature, strong opinions, a brave and generous heart, his love of a party, and his unflagging support of his 49ers.
He spent many happy years sailing his boat “The Trip” in Baja Mexico, developing lifelong friends among fellow sailors and divers. Becoming a landlubber once again, he moved to South Lake Tahoe and continued to make friends, as he snow skied winters, sailed Lake Tahoe, and fished and backpacked summers in the Sierra, with his beloved dog, Hoku, at his side.
Ralph is survived by his wife of 5 years, Ting Yi and her son James, by an older brother and many cousins. He will be missed by all and lovingly remembered by his closest friends, including Cash, Starr, Joyce and John. A very special thank you to Hospice by the Lake’s dedicated staff and volunteers, who provided such invaluable care and generous support to Ralph and his family.
A private celebration of his life will be held. Remembrances may be placed on McFarlane Mortuary’s website at: www.McFarlaneMortuary.com
The family requests, in lieu of flowers, donations be made in his name to:
