Obituary: Robert Dwight (Bob) Horney

August 26, 1933 -August 2, 2013

Bob passed away at his home August 2, 2013 in South Lake Tahoe, CA.

Bob was a kind, loving, hard working and intelligent man. His wife, three sons, his daughter-in laws, his 6 surviving grandchildren dearly loved him.

Bob was born in Fort Collins, Colorado on August 26, 1933 to Dwight and Lydia Lehl Horney. He graduated from Fort Collins High School in 1951 and Colorado State University with a BS degree in mechanical engineering in 1955. He was married to Barbara Lehmann on June 12, 1955. They moved to Burbank, California in 1955 where he began his career as a design engineer for Lockheed. He was drafted into the army in 1956 where he was placed on the design team at Redstone Arsenal Army Ballistic Missile Agency under the direction of Dr. Wernher Von Braum to develop the Jupiter, intermediate-range ballistic missile. The Jupiter/Columbia 1 was the US’s answer to the USSR launch of the Sputnik and the beginning of NASA. After his obligation was done with the army in 1958, he and his family moved backed to Southern California and he resumed his career with Lockheed as a design engineer. He retired in 1991 after 35 years with the company. He and his wife retired to South Lake Tahoe in 1992.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Barbara, his sons, Randy (Christina), Andy, and Brandall (Soledad), his sister, Mary Munn, his niece, Kelli Turner, friends, Ted and Barbara Smith, his grandchildren, Elizabeth, Samantha, James, Morgan, Shaila and Kalani. He was preceded in death by his parents, and grandson, Landon.

His ashes will be interred at Assumption Cemetery, Simi Valley, CA near his grandson.
