Obituary: Dorothy Farnon

Lake Tahoe lost a shining star on Jan. 3, 2014, when Dorothy Farnon passed away in her home of natural causes. Dorothy was born in Pennsylvania on August 26, 1926. She and her family later moved to Chicago where she was raised and began taking dance, gymnastics, and piano lessons. Being a gifted lyricist from a young age, she wrote the alma mater for her university. In Chicago she danced at the Chez Paris where she met her husband, Brian Farnon, performing alongside such notables as Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr., to name a few. They then moved to Los Angeles where she continued her dancing at the Moulin Rouge. She later formed “The Farrells”, a song and dance duo. Dorothy was a talented choreographer and lyricist, teaching hundreds of students to dance and perform. She and Brian wrote the well loved Christmas song “Christmas Land” performed by Tony Bennett. Dorothy taught dancing to children beginning in Chicago and continuing in Los Angeles. Dorothy, Brian and their sons moved to South Lake Tahoe in 1967. She had a thriving dance studio in South Lake Tahoe for many years, presenting annual eagerly anticipated recitals. She and Brian wrote their original production of Ebenezer Scrooge, which graced the stage of Harrah’s Tahoe beginning in 1982 and extending through the late 1990’s. Scrooge was a much loved, well attended production in which many Tahoe locals looked forward to performing in each year.

Dorothy is survived by her two sons, Michael and Brian Farnon; grandchildren, Matthew Farnon and Meghan Farnon Tompkins; great grandson, Brody Tompkins; and stepdaughters, Sharon Crigler, Charmian Carr, and Darlene Parker. She will be forever in our hearts and remembered for her quick wit, love of animals and people, life, and Christmas. Her love of Tahoe and the Arts drove her to produce many successful recitals in addition to the annual Scrooge productions, benefitting many local community organizations. Dorothy was very philanthropic donating to such organizations as Barton Hospital, the local Humane Society, Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care, and the Boys and Girls Club. To continue this tradition, in lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Dorothy’s honor to one or two of her favorite charities: Lake Tahoe Humane Society, P.O. Box PET, South Lake Tahoe, Ca. 96158 or Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care, Inc. 1485 Cherry Hills Cir., South Lake Tahoe, Ca. 96150.

A Celebration of Dorothy’s life will be held at an Open House on Saturday February 8, from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm, at Edgewood Tahoe. Please follow this link for details and to RSVP: http://www.evite.com/event/026EPF53J7EA64WLGEPDO4R7JCRUIA
