Lady Warriors fall to Grizzlies

Whittell’s Lady Warriors (4-13, 2-8) lost to nonleague opponents Loyalton (9-4, 3-1) at home Monday night.

The score stayed close throughout the first two quarters and the Warriors went into halftime down 31-26. In the second half, the Grizzlies started to pull away and the game ended with a score of 71-54.

Despite the loss, coach Tom Esposito was optimistic.

“This was our highest scoring game of the season,” he said. “We played pretty well. We had no pressure because it was a nonleague game.”

The team had 18 free throw opportunities and went seven for 18 at the line.

Loyalton freshman Rachel Peterman was hard to contain as she had 34 points with 14 coming off free throws.

“We need to play more body control and not get behind the play,” said Esposito.

Senior Zoe Bertz had 20 points and 21 rebounds. Kelsey Kjer had 10 points and Kenya Maltase, Chelsea Rodriguez and Tori Jimenez all had seven.

Whittell’s next game is Friday night at home against the 0-10 Sage Ridge.
