Herrera places fourth at state tournament

South Tahoe’s Andrew Herrera accomplished a feat no freshman in his weight has accomplished in recent memory, if ever, last weekend at the 2014 NIAA Division I, I-A & III/IV Nevada State High School Wrestling Championships.

Herrera competed in the 1-A division and he was the only underclassman wrestler in his eight-man bracket, but still managed to earn a medal with a fourth-place finish. Addison Day and James Sorensen both went 0-2 and failed to place.

Andrew lost his quarterfinals match by falling in the second period to Moapa Valley Junior Kaleb Bodily. Then he put the loss behind him and picked up two tough decision victories. First, he defeated Boulder City’s Dylon Dennington 8-4. His next opponent was Junior Sam Tucsnak of Pahrump in the consolation semi-finals. Herrera came out of the thrilling match with a 9-7 victory.

Coach Robbins was pleased with the Herrera’s effort.

“That was exciting, he stopped a couple of good throws, hit a nice cradle and wrestled smart in the third period,” he said.

In the consolation finals, Herrera wrestled Bodily, who he met in the first round of the tournament. This time he was able to go the distance losing a shootout 15-8.

“He battled the entire match. He got out of control once which cost him 5 points. That was a tough kid, we had a much better plan than this morning,” Robbins said of the significance of the accomplishment, “Great tournament for a freshman, definitely a good start to achieving his goal of being the best South Tahoe wrestler ever.”

Herrera appeared happy but not satisfied.

“I am happy to medal, my goal was to get first but I am happy,” he said. “Next year I am going to put even more time in and I am going to take first.”

Despite looking forward to next season he was still ready for at least a small break.

“I can’t wait to sleep and eat,” he said.

The fourth-place finish wrapped up his freshman season in which he recorded 39 victories and led the team in points.
